West Sayville FD celebrates its 125th Anniversary

2016 will be a special time for the West Sayville Fire Department. It’s the year in which we will begin our 125th year of service to the communities of Oakdale and West Saville. From the first meeting of the West Sayville Hook & Ladder Company on October 1, 1891 in Dingman Van Popering’s general store that once stood where our Headquarters station presently does, to the fourteen hundred and fifth (1,405th) meeting we convened in January of this year, it has been a storied history. The department has grown from just a single two story building housing a hand drawn ladder cart and a handful of volunteers to a two station operation with a fleet of thirteen primary response vehicles, another half-dozen ancillary units and 123 members which responded to over 500 emergencies last year. To reflect back on its origin, growth and history, the department will be undertaking a number of activities over the course of the year including the hosting of the annual Islip Town Volunteer Firemen’s Association parade on August 13.
