On September 6th, 2014 the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire. While enroute, Chief Robert Doucet was notified by the dispatcher of reports of visible smoke and flames. Chief Doucet requested that a working fire be transmitted.
Once onscene, the Chief assumed command . Crews stretched a line through the side door of the house and extinguished the fire. A primary search was conducted and while no residents were home at the time, a dog was rescued from the residence and handed over to Sayville Community Ambulance. They transported the dog to a local animal hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Sayville Community Ambulance was on scene and provided rehab for firefightes due to the high humidity. Mutual Aid was provided by Bohemia FD, Sayville FD, and Bayport FD.
On February 3rd 2014 the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire. While enroute Chief Robert Doucet got a report from a member of the Sayville Fire Department that there was visable fire coming from a windows on the 1st floor of the house. With that information and heavy smoke in the area Chief Doucet requested that a working fire be dispatched. Once onscene the Chief assumed command and operations was assumed by 2nd Assistant Chief Todd Gray . The crews from Engine 8 and Engine 1 streatched a line to the 1st floor and extinguished the fire. The remaining crews were tasked with extensive overhaul on the 2nd floor, looking for any additional fire spread. The fire was quickly brought under control. Sayville Community ambulance was on scene and transported 2 residents to the hospital. Mutual Aid was provided by Bohemia FD, Sayville FD, and Bayport FD.
Snow accumulation or the results of plowing and snow clearing can completely cover or restrict access to fire hydrant.
Blocked hydrants mean slower response to extinguishing fires which can result in catastrophic consequences if Fire Fighters have to spend time locating a buried hydrant and / or clear snow away from it, especially if the snow is heavily compacted from snow plowing.
What can you do?
Keep an eye on fire hydrants on or adjacent to your home or business and keep the snow cleared away from your fire hydrant. Clear a path to fire hydrants from the road and remove snow from all sides so it is visible from the road, and easily accessible to connect a fire hose to it.
'Adopt' a hydrant and make it part of your shoveling and snow clearing routine. It will only take a few extra minutes and is a quick and easy way to help us to help you and your neighbors.

In the afternoon of June 15th 2013 the West Sayville FD was activated for a Commercial Structure fire at St. John University on Montauk Hwy in Oakdale. Upon arrival of 3rd Assistant Chief G. Savino a working Fire was transmitted due to a heavy smoke condition. Upon further investigation, it was confirmed that there was a fire in an office on the 2nd floor. The fire was quickly extinguished and the crews check for extension. Mutual Aid was provided by the Bohemia FD, East Islip FD, Sayville FD and Bayport FD. Sayville Community Ambulance responded to provide any medical assistance.
In the afternoon of June 14th 2013 WSFD was alerted for a vehicle fire on the corner of Apian way and Locust Ave. Upon the arrival of 1st Assistant Chief L. Domingo, he alerted the responding units of an involved vehicle. Engine 1, Engine 8 and Rescue 3 responded and quickly extinguished the fire.
On the night of March 19th at 9:16pm, the WSFD was alerted of a reported structure fire at 29 Cloverdale Drive in Oakdale. As units were responding, the dispatcher advised them that there were also reports of heavy smoke in the area. Engine 3-10-8 was the first unit to arrive on scene and Captain Billy Savino reported a working fire and mutual aid was started. Chief Doucet and Ass.t Chiefs Domingo, Gray & Gary Savino arrived and directed the firefighting efforts. The fire had started in the laundry room, and had already extended through the roof upon arrival. The firefighting efforts were hampered due to the heavy amounts of storage throughout the dwelling. Bohemia & Sayville FD's responded and were put to work, and due to the large amount of overhaul required, Bayport and east Islip FD's were also requested to the scene. 2 firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries by the Community Ambulance Company. The SCPD Arson Squad and the Islip Town Fire Marshal were called in to determine the origin & cause of the blaze.

At 2:47pm on March 14th, the WSFD was activated for a structure fire at 160 Willow Wood Drive in Oakdale, with an additional report of the occupants trapped. 1st Assistant Chief Domingo was first to arrive on scene and transmitted the working fire, and mutual aid was ordered to the scene. It was also reported back that the occupants were already out and were in need of medical care, which was rendered by the Community Ambulance Company. Chief Doucet assumed command upon arrival, with Assistant Chief Domingo running the interior operations. The arriving crews stretched an attack line and completed ventilation. On February 26th at 7:00 pm, the WSFD was activated for a structure fire at 64 Twin River Drive in Oakdale. Upon arrival of 2nd Asst. Chief Gray, it was confirmed that the attached garage was fully involved, and it was already extending into the dwelling, of which the owner was away. Shortly thereafter, Chief Doucet arrived on scene, assumed command, and directed the first due engine, 3-10-1, to connect to the hydrant and to stretch the initial attack lines. As other WSFD apparatus were continuing to arrive on scene and put to work, mutual aid from the Bohemia & Sayville FD's was also requested, as well as the Bayport FD to stand-by at WSFD Headquarters. Asst Chiefs Gray & Savino directed the interior firefighting operations as the fire had extended into the attic and 2nd floor of the home. The fire was extinguished and the scene was turned over to the Islip Town Fire Marshal's and the SCPD Arson Squad.

In the early morning of February 7th 2013, the West Sayville FD was activated for a reported structure fire. As Lieutenant B. D'Onofrio was responded to the firehouse he confirmed that we had a fire in a shed next to the residence. Chief of Department Robert Doucet arrived on the scene a short time later and assumed command. The fire was quickly extinguished. There was also minor heat damage to the side of the residence. In the early morning of October 21st 2012, the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Locust Ave with a cross of Sunrise Hwy. Upon arrival of 1st Assistant Chief B. Doucet, it was confirmed that we had a working structure fire in an abandoned house with fire going up the side. Chief of Department J. Schroeder assumed command and Mutual Aid departments were activated.
Further investigation confirmed that there was heavy fire load in the basement extending to the first floor. The first due engine crew made entry into the basement from the rear and extinguished the fire. Crews from the additional engine made entry through the front door to attack the fire on the first floor.
Due to the heavy fire load in the basement, the first floor had burnt through. The fire was quickly extinguished and extensive overhaul took place. Assistance was provided by the Bohemia FD, Sayville FD and Bayport FD as well as the Islip Town Fire Marshals Office and Suffolk County Police Arson Squad. On the evening of October 1st 2012, the West Sayville Fire Department responded to a Vehicle Fire on Sunrise Hwy Express portion. Upon arrival of 1st Assistant Chief Doucet it was confirmed that there was a vehicle with an engine compartment fire.

On September 19th 2012 the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire at the Village Court Apartment Complex. Upon the arrival of the Chiefs it was confirmed that there was a fire in a 1st floor Rental Office. The fire was quickly extinguished by responding units. The fire was contained to the initial apartment and the adjoining apartments were checked for extension and for the presence of carbon monoxide.
Assistance was provided by the Bohemia FD, Sayville FD and Bayport FD. Community Ambulance stood-by for medical assistance if needed.(Additional pictures)
7/7/12 - WSFD Responds to working Structure Fire
On the afternoon on July 7th 2012 the West Sayville Fire Department was alerted for a report of a structure fire on La Salle Pl in Oakdale. Chief J. Schroeder was first on-scene and confirmed that there was an exterior fire that was extending into the attic. When the engine crews arrived they were directed to secure a hydrant and stretch two hand lines, one line to the exterior and one to the second floor to the attic access. Under the direction of Assistant Chief T. Gray, the interior crew gained access to the attic and extinguished the fire, while the exterior fire was put out.
Additional crews from Bayport FD, Bohemia FD and Sayville FD assisted. Community Ambulance provided a rehab and cooling area for the firefighters due to the extreme heat that day.
When you call 9-1-1 because you have an emergency, minutes can seem like hours as you wait for that police officer or firefighter or paramedic to show up at your door. Everyday across the USA emergency personnel lose precious time getting to the location where they are needed because they can't locate the home or business: house or business address numbers were not readily visible from the street.
Things You'll Need:
- House numbers, 4" in height, available at hardware, home improvement or department store, if you're going to mount directly on your house or place of business.
- Free-standing sign post to mount 4" numbers to if you need to locate your street address number closer to the street, e.g., you have a long driveway or your house sits more that 100 feet off the street
A term used by fire-weather forecasters to call attention to limited weather conditions of particular importance that may result in extreme burning conditions. It is issued when it is an on-going event or the fire weather forecaster has a high degree of confidence that Red Flag criteria will occur within 24 hours of issuance. Red Flag criteria occurs whenever a geographical area has been in a dry spell for a week or two, or for a shorter period , if before spring green-up or after fall color, and the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) is high to extreme and the following forecast weather parameters are forecasted to be met:
1) a sustained wind average 15 mph or greater
2) relative humidity less than or equal to 25 percent and
3) a temperature of greater than 75 degrees F.
In some states, dry lightning and unstable air are criteria.
A Fire Weather Watch may be issued prior to the Red Flag Warning.
If you hear a Red Flag Warning issued from the Nation Weather Service please be careful if you are using an outdoor fireplace and never discard a cigarette out of a car window.

* Over one-third (35%) of all gas and charcoal grill home structure fires begin on an exterior balcony or unenclosed porch.

The West Sayville Junior Fire Department will be hosting a Breakfast with Santa on Sunday December 18th 2011 from 9:00 AM TO 12:00 PM at West Sayville FD Headquarters. Your child will be able to get their picture taken with Santa and enjoy a great breakfast. (Click here for more details)
The West Sayville Junior Fire Dept took 1st place at this years Annual Bohemia FD Holiday Parade. This year the Juniors modeled their float after a Gingerbread factory. The Juniors and members of the fire dept put in countless hours working on the float. Their hard work and dedication paid off.
NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. These turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures, and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of "oil-less" turkey fryer."
Daylight Savings Time ends on November 6th 2011, the West Sayville Fire Department wants to remind you to change your batteries in your smoke detector.
Every year, approximately 2,600 Americans die in home fires. Over half of these deaths (52%) occur between the hours of 10:00pm and 7:00am, when residents are typically sleeping. Smoke and toxic gases from a home fire are as deadly as heat and flames. Just two or three breaths of toxic smoke can render you unconscious. The majority of fire victims die or are injured from exposure to smoke and toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, not actual burns. In addition, smoke obscures vision, decreasing your ability to escape.
Smoke alarms save lives, prevent injuries, and minimize property damage by detecting fires early and alerting residents, allowing crucial time to escape. The risk of dying from a fire in a home without working smoke alarms is twice as high as in a home that has working smoke alarms.
Dial "911" only for life-threatening emergencies. Do not dial "911" for information.
Dial "852-COPS" for non-emergency police calls in Suffolk County.
Residents should be advised to be prepared with flashlights, drinking water, and non-perishable food supplies; fill bathtubs with water in case of water supply disruptions (to flush toilets), and secure their properties (tie down loose items).
All south of Sunrise Hwy should be prepared to evacuate to centers that will be advertised if necessary (pack a few essentials). A portable radio with replacement batteries would also be a good idea.
Despite a five point deficit after the opening contest and a preceding string of second and third place tournament finishes following a win at the season’s opener, the West Sayville Fire Department Flying Dutchmen Drill Team demonstrated their prowess for winning by rebounding to capture an unprecedented eleventh New York State Motorized Championship title on August 20, 2011 at Central Islip (Click here for full press release)
On August 1st at 10:30 hrs the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire at #30 Tyler Avenue located just blocks from their headquarters. Upon arrival of Chief of Department Joseph Schroeder smoke was visible from the second floor of the residence. Apparently a contractor was working on the structure when he accidentally cut through an electrical component starting the fire. First arriving engines were directed to lay 5” supply lines to the fire building and hand lines were deployed to the second floor under the direction of Assistant Chief Robert Doucet. Automatic Mutual Aid was already enroute from the Sayville FD as per pre planned protocol. High heat and humidity weather conditions necessitated numerous mutual aids from the Bohemia, East Islip, Holbrook, Bayport and Islip Terrace Fire Departments. Lakeland Fire department was requested to stand by at West Sayville‘s main. With conditions deteriorating rapidly inside, interior attack lines were ordered out of the building. West Sayville’s Tower Ladder 5 was set up directly in front of the location and provided a master stream directly into the second floor fire location making for a quick knock down of the main body of fire. Hand lines were then able to re-enter the building to attack the remaining fire. Numerous firefighters were rehabbed by the Sayville Community Ambulance Company with one West Sayville firefighter being transported to Southside Hospital for observation. Suffolk County Police Arson was requested to the scene as is standard practice with incidents similar to this. National Grid and LIPA were also requested to the scene to shut power to the location. The perennial season opening firematic competitive drill has typically been hosted by the Lindenhurst Fire Department. This year was no different with the host conducting its fifty-first running of the Long Island Invitational Parade and Drill on Saturday, June 4, at the department’s training facility off of Wellwood Avenue. Also unchanged, so it seems, was the winner of the annual tournament which turned out to be the Flying Dutchmen drill team of the West Sayville Fire Department, their fifth consecutive year of doing so. The experienced team piled up thirty-two points in the eight contests competed against twenty-one other volunteer fire departments from throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties giving them an easy twelve point edge over the second place Yellow Hornets from Hempstead. The West Sayville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 139 Rollstone Avenue, West Sayville, at approximately 10:15 pm on Sunday, May 29, 2011. The fire was discovered by residents who had just returned home from an evening out. Upon arrival Chief Schroeder found the homeowner armed with a fire extinguisher and attempting to locate the family dog, which was still on the second floor of the house (the dog soon exited the building by the front door). Upon entry to the building I found the first floor charged with smoke and heat and fire consuming the interior staircase to the basement. See full story and pictures here
On Sunday May 29th, West Sayville FD beat The Sayville FD in the annual Memorial Day softball game by the score of 27 - 5. This is the 5th meeting between the two teams. West Sayville is leading the series 3 - 2. This year the game was played at the Broadway Ave fields in Sayville. (in the picture is both West Sayville and Sayville FDs)
On Friday, May 6th at 14;19 hours the West Sayville Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an overturned gasoline tanker on the Sunrise Highway Service Road, Eastbound at Locust Avenue in Oakdale. First arriving Assistant Chief Robert Doucet, verified an overturned 9000 gallon gasoline tanker, leaking heavy amounts of gasoline. West Sayville Engines 3-10-1 and 3-10-8 were ordered to pick up nearby hydrants to secure a water supply. Heavy Rescue 3-10-3 was directed to start laying down speedy dry in an attempt to slow down the flow of gasoline into the sewers. See full story and pictures here.
On March 5th 2011 WSFD was activated for a MVA Heavy Rescue near the intersection of Montauk Hwy and Oakdale Bohemia Road. Upon arrival of 1st assistant Chief Doucet it was confirmed that one vehicle was on its side with the occupant still inside. Suffolk County Police ESU was on scene and began extrication of the occupant. Rescue 3 arrived on scene shortly after and assisted SCPD in removal of the roof. The occupant was removed and was transported by Sayville community Ambulance to a near by hospital. See pictures here
On February 20th 2011 at approximately 8:35am the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Van Bomel Blvd in Oakdale. Upon arrival of 3rd assistant Chief Gray it was confirmed that there was fire that had extended from the fireplace into the walls. Upon arrival of the engine crews a 1" 3/4 line was stretched and the truck crews began to open the walls. The fire had worked its way from the first floor to an attic area above the garage. The fire was quickly extinguished but due to the fact the fire had traveled in the walls extensive overhaul was done.Assistance was provided by Bohemia, East Islip and Sayville Fire Department. Following a lead offered by the missing person's family, the West Sayville Fire Department was activated at, 4:07 pm to search the heavily wooded area of the former FAA property between Cherry Avenue and Locust Avenue, now maintained by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service. Under the direction of Chief Schroeder, elements of the Department began searching the area of approximately 79 acres with four-wheel-drive vehicles. Due to the heavy snow cover still present in that area, mutual aid assistance was requested from the Sayville Fire Department for their six-wheel-drive GI brush truck. As Suffolk County PD was arranging for K-9 and Aviation units to provide assistance, one of West Sayville's crews found the missing person - sitting under a tree and in good spirits. The somewhat dazed man stated that he had fallen and could not get up so he dragged himself under a tree where there was no snow. Due to the duration of time that he had been exposed to the elements, the crew requested EMS be dispatched for assistance. The patient was removed from the wooded area by the West Sayville Brush Unit and care was transferred to Community Ambulance Company. It appeared that since he was dressed in many layers of warm clothing hypothermia might have been averted. Members of Community Ambulance transported him to an area hospital for evaluation. At approximately 7:30 pm the Department was notified by family members that the missing person was at home and resting comfortably.
Congratulations to the new Chief of Department Joseph Schroeder. Chief Schroeder was sworn in on Jan. 7th 2011. The Chief has been an active member of the West Sayville Fire Department for the past 21 years. In that time he has served as Engine Company 1 Lieutenant, Captain and Department Training Officer.

On Dec. 6th 2010 WSFD was activated for a MVA Heavy Rescue at the intersection of Sunrise Hwy. and Smithtown Ave. Upon arrival of 3rd assistant Chief Domingo it was confirm that the Driver's side door had to be opened using the Hurst tool. The driver was removed and transported to the hospital by Sayville Community Ambulance. See pictures here

The West Sayville FD responded to a report of a vehicle fire on the Sunrise Highway service road at Sycamore Avenue on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 14:14hrs. Upon arrival of Ass't Chief Robert Doucet it was discovered to be a Gershow Flatbed with numerous scrap vehicles on the trailer. At least three of the vehicles were on fire initially. WSFD was activated for a structure fire at approx. 9:00 pm on Nov. 7th 2010. Upon arrival, the first chief confirmed that the house was fully involved with extension to the garage and two cars in the driveway. Assistance was provided from the Bayport, Bohemia, East Islip and Sayville fire departments and Sayville Community Ambulance. See pictures here
